City of Santa Fe, New Mexico Formally Launches Rubicon’s Smart City Platform

To celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15, the Environmental Services Division (ESD) for the City of Santa Fe, New Mexico, focused attention on its newly installed RUBICONSmartCity™ platform, and how it can improve residential and commercial waste and recycling services for its more than 80,000 citizens. The Environmental Services Division of the City of Santa Fe hosted an open house to see the technology in action on November 14.

The City of Santa Fe piloted the RUBICONSmartCity platform for six months. The City was able to work with Rubicon to incorporate elements specific to its operations. After an RFP process, the City chose to move the program forward by awarding a four-year contract to Rubicon Global. The RUBICONSmartCity platform includes a mobile app, a plug-in device, and a web-based portal. The technology allows the City of Santa Fe’s Environmental Services Division to track key metrics including service confirmations, missed pickups, and issues at the curb, as well as vehicle usage and maintenance information, leading to more efficient operations, and ultimately, improved service for its customers and citizens. Rubicon’s technology is now installed across the City’s entire waste and recycling fleet, numbering more than 60 vehicles covering more than 30 different routes.

Santa Fe recently passed the Sustainable Santa Fe 25-Year Plan, which reflects the City’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040. The Plan provides a roadmap to Santa Fe for a sustainable future, with waste reduction and recycling as one of the key elements. “The City of Santa Fe is committed to sustainability and combining that commitment with ways to maximize the value of our services to our citizens,” said Shirlene Sitton, Environmental Services Director for the City of Santa Fe. “Based on our experience with the RUBICONSmartCity platform, we know that the data and insights we collect will help our department maximize our services to the businesses and citizens of our city.”

“The RUBICONSmartCity platform helps cities of all sizes leverage data to make smarter decisions about recycling, waste, and city operations, leading to improvements in sustainability and quality of life that map to an overall mission to end waste,” said Michael Allegretti, Chief Strategy Officer, Rubicon Global. “The City of Santa Fe is committed to a sustainable future. Piloting RUBICONSmartCity, the City of Santa Fe was able to view and analyze data that helped the City improve customer service and help shape future policy decisions. We look forward to a fantastic partnership in the coming years that builds on that success.”
