Mission Driven: How Some At Rubicon Spent Our MLK Day of Service

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘what are you doing for others?’”

This past Monday, a national day spent to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rubicon offices closed down across the U.S. to give employees an opportunity to give back, serve others, and connect to the community.

One part of our Rubicon family spent the day volunteering at Helping Mamas, a food, clothing, and supply bank for single mothers and their children in Norcross, Georgia (about 30 minutes outside of Atlanta). Operating for just a few years now, Helping Mamas boasts some heartwarming statistics such as distributing over half of a million products to needy mothers and racking up over 6000 volunteer hours.

Eager Rubicon volunteers were given the opportunity to spend their MLK Day in a day of service, completing a bevy of pivotal projects for the baby supply bank. From organizing the new warehouse and sorting baby “bundles”; everyone was able to make a tangible contribution to the surrounding community.

Employees from every Rubicon department, from the C-Suite to the customer service team, came out in full force to help build bookshelves for donated books, unpack pallets full of feminine products and diapers, and make diaper bags.

Social workers will often come to the Helping Mamas team and request clothing and supplies for their cases. In order to streamline this process and make sure all bases were covered, volunteers thoughtfully sorted clothing and essentials by gender, age, and seasonality. These bundles aid in providing necessities for over 35,000 children.

Rubicon is driven by the mission to end waste in all of its forms. Helping Mamas is driven by their namesake, helping mothers. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work was also driven by a multitude of missions throughout his life. Missions drive action.
