Hidden “Main Streets” You Need to Know About

At Rubicon, we talk a lot about bringing the circular economy to Main Street America. It’s our goal to make sustainable, affordable waste and recycling solutions attainable for small business owners. Today we’re celebrating these incredible independent businesses by highlighting “main streets” you may not know about in your city.

Check out these hidden gem neighborhood streets, and you might just find your new favorite spot.

Canton Street – Roswell (Atlanta, GA):

North of Atlanta you’ll find the historic city of Roswell nestled in suburbia’s urban sprawl. Head over to Canton Street, lined with shops, restaurants, art galleries and sidewalk cafes set in historic buildings. The third Thursday of each month you can enjoy live music and free snacks during “Alive in Roswell.”

Don’t miss:

  • Spirited Boutique: If you’re looking for “boho chic” fashion or just want to peruse handmade jewelry from local artists, stop into this unique boutique. Psst, they also have a location on Main Street in Woodstock, GA.
  • Sweet!: Have a sweet tooth? This old-fashioned ice cream and candy shop will delight your inner child. Don’t miss the ice cream in a pretzel cone. I’ll say it again: Pretzel. Cone.
  • Table & Main: Set in a restored cottage, this restaurant exudes southern hospitality with local cuisine and a bourbon bar.

19th Street – Houston Heights (Houston, TX):

Another historic neighborhood worth a visit, Houston Heights dates back to the late 1800s. This area is filled with mom-and-pop shops and quaint boutiques. Take a stroll down 19th street to explore antiques, cafes and thrift stores. The street also features an event on the first Saturday of each month called “First Saturday Arts Market.” Visitors can enjoy live music, art and family friendly activities.

Don’t miss:

  • Jubilee: This boutique gives your shopping experience a killer soundtrack thanks to its massive vinyl selection. You’ll find locally made jewelry, home décor, gifts and a beautiful clothing collection.
  • Boomtown Coffee: When you need a pick-me-up while strolling down 19th Street, pop into Boomtown Coffee. This small-batch coffee roaster has a cozy café where you can admire local art while sipping your specialty brew.
  • Retropolis: This vintage co-op brings thrifting to a whole new level. Come ready to sift through decades worth of fashion trends to find your new favorite item.

Broadway – Land Park / Oak Park (Sacramento, CA)

The Land Park neighborhood (and neighboring Oak Park) in Sacramento has yet another charming, historic feel with streets lined by craftsman bungalows. The area’s popular Broadway street is packed with independently owned bars and restaurants. Take a global food tour with the many ethnic restaurants found on this strip.

Don’t miss:

  • Viet Ha Noodles & Grill: Step up to the brick-lined counter for a made-to-order bahn mi sandwich or another Vietnamese fare. This casual dining spot has great vibes and even greater food.
  • Oak Park Brewing Company: The owners of Oak Park Brewing Company started out as homebrewers before they were “nudged” into the idea of opening a commercial brewery. Lucky for us, their earliest fans helped move these tasty brews from hobby to hot spot pub.
  • Strapping: Self-described as “gifts and apparel for rad people,” Strapping Sacramento is a fun boutique where you can enjoy award-winning customer service while you shop.

Main Street is more than a name – it’s a lifestyle. Join us in celebrating Main Street America by taking a step off the beaten path and supporting the small businesses near you.
