Wren Unger Rubicon Global Employee Spotlight Mothers Day

Wren Unger has worn many hats during her time at Rubicon Global. She started as a Customer Relations Manager in early 2013 and transitioned into Business Channel Director almost two years ago. In that time, Unger has also taken on another role; becoming a mother. With an insatiable appetite for the outdoors and helping our planet, Wren Unger is instilling the values of sustainability in the next generation.

Let’s get to know Wren Unger:

What is your role at Rubicon? How long have you been with the company?

I have been with Rubicon for 5 years now and my role is a Business Channel Director for the manufacturing and industrial clients.

What changes have you seen at Rubicon over the last 5 years?

The biggest change that I’ve seen is to see the company become what Nate has always talked about. The technology, the assistance to haulers, the SMB sales team; the company has really grown into Nate’s vision.

What sparked your passion for sustainability?

When I was younger, my mom always took me for walks at our local nature trails. I developed a love for being outside. My ideal vacation is a tent in the woods or a spot on the beach and as time has progressed these places have become more crowded and more polluted as well. Having children, we all want to save the planet for the future generations.

What is it like working in a male-dominated industry?

I try not to think about it. I just come to work every day and do the best that I can and try to learn from everyone around me. I can’t say I don’t get a little kick out of being in meetings where we’re talking about trash and it’s mostly women.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

I have an amazing partner who really helps. It’s also super important to know when to turn it all off and when you need to put work away to focus on your family.

What is one piece of advice you would give a working mom?

Turn it off!

What do your kids think you do for a living?

My son knows I do something with recycling but he really thinks I just dig through trash all day.

How do you think Rubicon supports working mothers?

The maternity leave policy is amazing! I’m definitely looking forward to all of my time off that I am taking soon to have my second child. In addition to the women’s wellness room on the 18th floor, I always see people bringing their children to work when they are out of school and it’s not an issue.

If any actor (dead or alive) could play you in the movie of your life, who would you cast and why?

Alyssa Milano! I loved “Who’s the Boss” and I always wanted to be like her and have everyone call me Sam.

If you could play any professional sport: what would it be and why?

Nascar or Rally Racing because I love to go fast!

You’re on a deserted island and a helicopter drops down one food for you every day, what could you eat daily for the rest of your life?

My husband’s barbecue. No question.

What is one eco-responsible action that you try to incorporate into your everyday life?

I try to be conscious of the single-use items like straws and plastic bags and eliminate those from my routine.
